Edo Assembly approves Oshiomhole’s request to access CBN bailout fund

Benin  – Edo House of Assembly, has approved Gov. Adams Oshiomhole’s request to access bailout fund from the CBN to pay salary arrears of workers in the 18 local government councils in the state.

The legislators passed the resolution on Monday at plenary following a letter sent by the governor requesting approval to access bailout funds to pay the salary arrears totaling N3.167 billion.

Moving the motion in support of the request, House Majority Leader, Mr Foly Ogedengbe, said it was necessitated by the inability of local government councils to pay staff salary.

Mr Osiagbove Iyoha, (APC-Oredo East) who seconded the motion, urged council chairmen to be prudent with the resources made available to them.

He called on the house committee on local government and chieftaincy affairs to monitor the funds released to council chairmen to curb reckless expenditure.

In another development, a bill for the establishment of a Commission for Persons with Disabilities has scaled second reading.

Leading the debate on the bill, Majority leader, Mr Foly Ogedengbe, said that the establishment of the commission would secure and protect persons with disabilities.

“We have discovered that persons with disabilities are often discriminated against in the society.

“If passed, this bill will address inequality and create employment for persons with disabilities,” he said.

At the end of the debate, the Speaker, Mr Victor Edoror, directed Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development to make further legislative inputs into the bill. (NAN)
