Benin – The Edo House of Assembly on Tuesday called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to urgently rehabilitate the failed portion on the Ikpoba River bridge and the gully on the upper axis of the road.
The assembly made the call in a motion moved by Mr Henry Okhuorobo, member representing (APC Ikpoba Okha)and co-sponsored by 10 lawmakers in Benin on Tuesday.
Moving the motion, Okhuorobo said that the road served as a gateway to various parts of the country.
“It has been observed that certain portions of the Ikpoba River bridge and around Ikpoba Hill have caved in and need urgent attention.
“There is a potential danger to our citizens as well as impending hardship which, if not urgently attended to, will cut the city into two.”
The lawmaker noted that it was the duty of governments at all levels to construct and rehabilitate roads.
Other lawmakers supported the motion and called for collaboration with members of the National Assembly from Edo to fast track the repair of the federal road.
Ruling on the motion, the Speaker, Justin Okonoboh, stressed the need for the state Ministries of Works and Environment to collaborate with FERMA to urgently fix the said portion of the road.
Okonoboh thereafter, directed that the resolution of the assembly on the issue be sent to the relevant authorities for immediate action.
