BENIN – The Edo State House of Assembly on Monday resumed plenary after a month’s recess.
The house, which is the fifth assembly, immediately adopted a business calendar of 75 days for the fourth session of the second legislative quarter.
The house unanimously adopted the calendar after its presentation by the Majority Leader, Philip Shaibu.
Shaibu said the calendar, which began on Sept. 8, was expected to terminate on Dec. 19.
He said when implemented, the house would sit for 17 days in September; 23 days in October; 20 days in November and 15 days in December.
Shaibu said: “If we add the 75 days to the 36 days calendar for the first quarter, it would amount to a total of 111days of legislative activities for the first two quarters.’’ [eap_ad_2] The house subsequently adopted the calendar without amendment.
The Speaker, Uyi Igbe, thereafter directed that clean copies of the resolution should be sent to the governor for his assent.
Igbe congratulated the chairmen and members of the house committees on rules, business and government house; transport; local government and chieftaincy affairs; judiciary and energy for the awards they received from the House of Representatives for outstanding performance.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction of the assembly led by the Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea (PDP Esan South-East), also during a plenary, adopted its business calendar of 77 days.
The faction’s calendar is expected to end by Dec. 24, 2014.
NAN reports that the assembly has been in crisis since June 9, following the suspension of four lawmakers, including Ebea.
The PDP, with nine legislators, hold their plenary at the assembly complex while the 15 All Progressives Congress legislators sit at the old complex in Government House.(NAN)
