Enugu – The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has said that over 70 per cent of prepaid meters on the company’s customers’ network are by-passed.
The EEDC Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Monday.
He said that metering customers had been a major challenge facing most distribution companies.
“The peculiarity of high prevalence of energy theft and meter by-pass in the Southeast region has not also helped the situation.
“As a matter of fact, over 70 per cent of the prepaid meters on the network are by-passed,’’ he said.
Ezeh noted that EEDC had deployed Geographical Information System to map the network areas.
“We have equally embarked on elaborate enumeration of customers within the network,’’ he said.
Ezeh said the measure was aimed at “providing a sustainable and comprehensive all smart metering framework that will address and forestall the high prevalence of meter by-pass and energy theft in the region,’’ he said.
He advised EEDC customers to protect all power installations and avoid tampering with the meters and to pay their electricity bills promptly. (NAN)
