Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested Prof. Usman Yusuf, a former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), on Wednesday.
Yusuf, a professor of haematology-oncology and bone marrow transplantation, was taken from his Abuja home at around 4:46 p.m. in the presence of his wife and children. He was then driven to an undisclosed location.
The EFCC has not yet revealed the specific reason for his arrest. However, sources suggest it could be related to his tenure at NHIS.
A source close to the matter stated, “The reason for his arrest can’t be made public now because investigations are still ongoing. What I know is that he’s in custody and he will help the detectives in their investigations.”
In 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed Yusuf, seven months after a fact-finding panel from the Federal Ministry of Health recommended his removal over allegations of mismanaging ₦919 million.
