EFCC Chairman Ordered to Appear in Court for Contempt Trial Regarding Yahaya Bello Case

A Kogi State High Court has mandated Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to present himself in court on May 13, 2024. The summons follows allegations of disobeying a court order in the case involving the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Justice I. A. Jamil issued the ruling in response to a motion filed by Yahaya Bello’s legal representative, M.S. Yusuf, Esq. The motion sought an explanation from Olukoyede regarding actions allegedly taken by the EFCC in contravention of a court order issued on February 9, 2024.

The court order restrained the EFCC from certain actions pending the determination of the substantive Originating Motion. However, it is alleged that EFCC operatives attempted to arrest Yahaya Bello on April 17, 2024, despite the court order prohibiting such actions.

Justice Jamil’s ruling emphasized that the alleged actions by the EFCC amounted to contempt of court. Accordingly, Olukoyede has been directed to appear before the court to address the contempt charge.

The matter is scheduled to be heard on May 13, 2024, as ordered by Justice Jamil. This development underscores the importance of upholding court orders and respecting due legal processes.
