LAGOS – The Head Coach of Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt, Stanley Eguma, on Thursday urged organisers of the 2014 Federation Cup to restore the glamour usually associated with the competition.
The final of the 67-year-old Federation Cup, initially known as the Challenge Cup, was usually celebrated with pump and pageantry.
Eguma recalled that the competition used to have multinational companies as sponsors but expressed regret that the competition had lost the glamour associated with it.
“There needs to be an improvement because the glamour is virtually not there in the Federation Cup. I think the authorities need to improve on the sponsorship. Dolphins will on Aug. 16 in Lagos engage current cup holders, Enyimba FC of Aba, in this year’s final.
To get to the final, Dolphins beat Ingas 3-1 in the Round of 64; Kogi United 1-0 in the Round of 32; and El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri 1-0 in the round of 16.
They also defeated Lobi Stars of Makurdi 4-2 in the quarter finals and Prime FC 1-0 in the semi-finals.
Dolphins had played in the Federation Cup final four times and had won in all the finals in 2001,when they were called Eagle Cement, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
The club, going for their fifth time glory, would want to make history as one of the highest winners of the competition. (NAN)
