Cairom –  The National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Egypt says presidential election will take place between March 26 and March 28.

The NEC said on Monday that a run-off is set for between April 24 to April 26 if needed.

First round results will be announced on April 2 and, in the event of a run-off, on May 1.

NAN reports that Egyptian human rights lawyer and opposition leader Khaled Ali said in November that he would challenge President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in the 2018 presidential election, provided he is not barred from the contest.

Sisi himself has yet to declare if he will run but is widely expected to do so.

He won 97 percent of the vote in 2014.

Many in Egypt see him as vital to stability in a country where unrest since 2011 has battered the economy.

Under Sisi’s presidency, thousands of dissidents have been jailed.

The government has shut down independent media and heavily restricted the conducting of opinion polls. (Reuters/NAN)
