ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Elder statesman, Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi is dead.
A former presidential aspirant, Shinkafi died today (Wednesday afternoon) in London after a prolonged illness.
His former media aide, Ngozi Asoya, confirmed the development to Sundiata Post in a telephone conversation.
Shinkafi was a renowned intelligence and security operative. From 1979 to 1983 he was director-general of the defunct Nigerian Security Organisation (NSO), which metamorphosed into the current Department of State Security (DSS).
The Marafan Sokoto made attempts to run as president of Nigeria. In 1992 he had a stiff competion with Alhaji Adamu Ciroma for the presidential ticket of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) before the military government of Ex-President Ibrahim Babangida cancelled the exercise.
When the Abdulsalami Abubakar regime decided to return the country to civil rule in 1999, Shinkafi pitched tent with the defunct All Peoples Party (APP). He was later persuaded to enter into an alliance with the defuct Alliance for Democracy (AD), which had Chief Olu Falae as presidential candidate.
Under the APP/AD alliance, Shinkafi contested as Falae’s running mate but their joint ticket lost the 1999 presidential election to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with Olusegun Obasanjo as flag bearer.
