Lagos – An educationist, Mrs Clementina Doregos, on Friday said that empowering more women with various skills could reduce the ongoing economic recession in the country.
Doregos, the Proprietress of Doregos Schools, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the end of a Widows’ Empowerment Programme organised by TESCAM Women Support Initiative in Lagos.
According to her, women are good administrators of the entire society because God gave them special management skills to pull and coordinate the children and men.
“When you empower a woman, you build a better society, especially with useful skills that would boost productivity and self reliance.
“A country that gives attention to the development of her women would surely open up her entrepreneurship and economic growth, ‘’ she told NAN.
She urged women to make themselves available to relevant private and government groups for training as it would reduce economic hardship to the barest minimum.
“I am telling you, dear women, wake up, especially with the economic hardship. We must use these skills to improve the economy of our nation.
“As home builders, these skills can be extended to men, children and the entire nation as productivity would be enhanced, “ she said.
Doregos said that if women and men go into large scale production of house hold items, it would discourage importation of goods as importation made development static.
The Founder and Coordinator of TESCAM Women Support (TWS), Mrs Theresa Ohumaegbulem, also told NAN that the most affected in the ongoing economic recession, being the women, should raise concern.
“Women being the most affected in the ongoing economic hardship deserve special attention by government and Non Governmental Organisations so that the situation can be reversed.
“Training the women, especially the widows, who thought all hope was lost with useful skills such as catering, tailoring, making of home items and mini- factory production, would boost employment,
“Bring life back to them, reduce economic hardship and make items affordable to the common man, which is what TESCAM started in 2012,” Ohumaegbulem said.
She said that over 200 women had been empowered with various skills such as soap making, decorations, and bead making; after which a token of N20,000 was advanced as take off.
