LAGOS – The Consul-General of Germany in Lagos, Mr Michael Derus, on Thursday advised Nigeria to apply other renewable and sustainable sources in its drive to improve its energy sector.
Derus gave the advice in Lagos at a seminar on “Bio-gas: an Untapped Source for Power Supply”, organised by the Consulate and the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Nigeria.
“Whenever I hear that there are some considerations by Nigeria to go into nuclear solution, I have always advised against it.
“Germany has decided to step out of nuclear energy.
“ That means we want to give more space to sustainable and renewable energy solutions and, of course, do away with the nuclear solutions,’’ he said.
The consul-general said that the existing energy partnership between Nigeria and Germany would be strengthened in the years ahead.
Derus said the seminar was a follow-up to two previous ones aimed at enabling Nigerians and Germans to share ideas on improving Nigeria’s power supply.
The diplomat enjoined Nigerians to tap into the benefits of using bio-gas solutions.
“After two previous seminars on embedded energy and energy efficiency, today, we are organising another one bio-gas.
“We want Nigeria to know that bio-gas is really an energy solution to be considered,’’ he said.
Mrs Kofo Adeleke, the Programmes Director, Community Conservation and Development Initiatives (CCDI), an NGO, commended the German Government for sustaining its support for improvement in Nigeria’s power supply.
Adeleke said that the importance of bio-gas as an energy solution was yet to be realised in Nigeria.
She, however, said that many companies were showing interest in the development of bio-gas in Nigeria. (NAN)
