Engineer in court for swindling builder

Abuja – The police on Wednesday arraigned a civil engineer, Ben Macheo, in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly swindling a builder of N765,000 worth of woods.
The accused, who resides at No. 72 Apo Resettlement, Abuja, is standing trial on a two – count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Edet, told the court that one Prince Elichukwu Onyekwere, also of No. 72 Apo Resettlement, reported the matter at Apo Police Station on Aug. 13.
Edet said that on Aug. 12, the accused went to the complainant’s building site at Waru village and deceived him that he had deposited N200,000 into his account.
He said the accused did this because he wanted to collect varieties of wood from the complainant.
Edet said Onyekwere then ignorantly entrusted to him 1,500 planks worth N525,000.
He said the complainant also gave him 2,000 bamboos, valued at N120, 000 and 1,000 pieces of 2×2 planks valued at N120, 000.
The prosecutor said the complainant later discovered that Macheo did not pay the said amount into his account.

Edet said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
The accused denied committing the offences.
The Judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the accused bail in the sum of N800,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Oct. 19 for further hearing. (NAN)
