Enugu – The Enugu State House of Assembly has advised government agencies to be prudent in the management of their finances for economic development.
The Chairman of its committee on public accounts and anti- corruption, Mr Chinedu Nwamba, gave the advise when the committee visited some government establishments in Enugu on Monday.
At the Enugu State Transport Company (ENTRACO), the committee expressed disappointment that for the past 30 months, its management could not pay workers’ salaries in spite of maintaining 13 functional depots.
Nwamba, however, commended the new General Manager of the company, Mr Bob Itanyi, who assumed duties three months ago for paying the workers as and when due.
The chairman further expressed disappointed with the shoddy way the financial records of the company were kept.
He urged the general manager to carry out a comprehensive personnel audit to fish out the `bad eggs’ and do everything within his powers to revitalise the state-owned outfit.
In his reaction, Itanyi informed the lawmakers that on assumption of office, he increased and expanded the revenue base of the company and gave revenue targets to the depot managers.
He explained that the company would soon open more depots in Abuja, Abakaliki, Obollo-Afor, Iwollo-Oghe and other places.
The committee also visited the Enugu State Agricultural Development Programme (ENADEP) and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) where it commended the bursary departments for good financial record keeping.
