Enugu -The Enugu State Director of Sports, Mr John Eli, said on Tuesday that the state’s schools sports would provide the avenue to discover budding talents in various sports.
The director told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that the fiesta would take place between Oct. 7 and Oct. 9.
He said that the state government planned to diversify the school sports competitions as an avenue for discovering more talents from the six educational zones of the state.
“Due to the transition of government in the country, the ministry could not organise the school sports when due but now that a new administration has come, it is necessary to continue from where we stopped.
“The new commissioner for youth and sports has said that school sports is his priority since he too was a product of school sports.
“We are proposing this year’s school sports finals to be in October, and the preliminary stage will be in the six educational zones at Agbani, Udi, Agwu, Enugu, Oboloafor and Nsukka to encourage grassroots participation,” he said.
He also said that the ministry was working round the clock to solve the problem of non-availability of sporting facilities in the schools.
“We have discovered that some schools do not have complete field and track events, and it is affecting the athletes.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”10″]
“The ministry has concluded plans to mark the school tracks for effective sporting activities,” Eli said.
He said that the new administration in the state would take sports to a greater height since Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and the commissioner are out to support its growth. (NAN)
