Ikeja – For allegedly defrauding a man of N1.49 million on the pretext of procuring a piece of land for him, an estate agent, Oladele Adeyemi, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The defendant, 49, whose address was not given, is facing charges of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, the defendant  conspired with others still at large and obtained  N1.49 million from one Mr Olugbenga Ogunniyi, who he promised to procure a piece of land for.

Ayorinde told the court that the defendant committed the offences with others still at large on Oct. 22 at 10.30a.m. at No. 89 Ogba Road, Agege, a Lagos suburb.

He alleged that the defendant collected the N1.49 million from Ogunniyi but failed to provide the land.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B. O. Osunsanmi, admitted the defendant to N200,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and have evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

NAN reports that the alleged offences violate Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

Stealing attracts three years’ jail term while obtaining money under false pretences is punishable with 15 years’ imprisonment.

The  court  adjourned the case until Feb. 3 for mention.
