Lagos – A 34-year-old estate agent, Sheriff Abiodun, who police accused of allegedly defrauded a student, Mr Usman Oloyede of N75,00, on Wednesday appeared in a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Abiodun, who resides in Yaba area of Lagos, is charged with two counts of obtaining by false pretences and stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 15 at No. 1, Fatai Ade str., in Yaba, Lagos.
Nurudeen said the accused collected N75, 000 from the complainant, Oloyede, a student of Yaba college of Technology, as payment for a one room near the main campus.
He said that the accused gave the complainant the keys to room but when he went to clean it, he discovered that it was already occupied.
Nurudeen said that the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for questioning.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
After the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.
Chief Magistrate, Mrs K.B. Ayeye, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
Ayeye ordered that the surety must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of one year tax payment to Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until Feb. 20 for trial.
