Lagos – The EU Delegation to Nigeria and West Africa, has told Nigerian firms to establish a Business Cooperation Centre to link enterprises in Europe and Nigeria to boost international trade.
Mr Fillippo Amato, Head of Trade and Economic Section of the delegation, gave the advice on the sidelines of a forum on International Trade Relations and the Nigerian Economy on Friday in Lagos.
The event was organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).
Amato said the centre would share knowledge and technologies among business partners in the participating countries.
He said it was imperative for Nigeria to improve its non-oil export for greater economic gains and improvement of its position in regional and world trade.
The envoy named some of the exported goods as oil and gas, cocoa, leather and skin, fish and crustacean, rubber, copper and oil skin.
He said, “Nigeria should exploit its various natural resources to boost its penetration into the EU market which is its main trade partner for export.
“It can boost its non-oil export by meeting EU requirements on standards and quality of products.”
According to him, strong commitment and coordination between the private and public sectors will assist the country to achieve compliance with international best practices.
He noted that the 12-million euro (about N2.6bn) National Quality Infrastructure Programme of the EU, implemented by UNIDO in Nigeria would assist the country achieve quality in its products.
He said that the scheme meant for the establishment of a National Quality Policy, was aimed at improving standards and quality of goods produced in Nigeria. (NAN)
