Nouakchott (Mauritania) – The European Union (EU) delegation in Nouakchott, on Tuesday gave World Food Programme (WFP) 438,800 dollars to provide humanitarian aid to Malian refugees in the country.
The aid would include provision of food to the 50,000 refugees accommodated in Mbera camp in eastern Mauritania.
Representative of WFP in Mauritania, Mrs Janne Suvanto, who disclosed this in Nouakchott, said that the EU’s contribution had come at a decisive moment.
She said that the gesture would enable WFP to mobilise a stock of 270 tonnes of rice, 72 tonnes of legume, maintain assistance to the Malian refugees and protect them from hunger.
Suvanto, however, expressed concern that without additional assistance from other partners, significant reductions in the assistance or even its cancellation would be inevitable from October.
She said that finance assistance to the Malian refugees in Mauritania was vital.
