ABUJA – Dr Osahon Enabulele, The immediate past President of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), on Tuesday called on governments at all levels to address the rising incidences of cancer in Nigeria.
Enabulele made this call in a condolence message on the death of the former Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mrs Oluremi Oyo in Abuja.
He said that the death of Oyo should be a wake-up call to government at all levels to be more committed to addressing the rising cancer cases and other non-communicable diseases.
“The increasing death of Nigerians in foreign hospitals on account of cancer related ailments should be seen as a constant reminder of the need for government at all levels to massively invest in health awareness and health promotion campaigns. [eap_ad_2] ”Government should urgently institute a policy for mandatory free annual health check-up for all citizens of Nigeria at local, state and national levels,” Enabulele said.
He said Universal Health Coverage should be implemented in Nigeria through accelerated assent to the National Health Bill and the National Health Insurance Commission Bill.
Enabulele, currently Vice-President, Commonwealth Medical Association, said that a comprehensive world class Cancer Centre for Cancer Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment should be established in Nigeria.
He described the late Oyo as a very rare Nigerian that one would want to see populate the country.
He said Oyo was a very distinguished and patriotic professional and a loving, calm and caring mother, who was always ready to sacrifice her comfort for others.
”She always came across to me as a shining example of a professional journalist and a mother with the milk of human kindness.”
‘Since hearing of her death from a cancer related ailment I have been unable to hold back tears, especially as I still have vivid memories of my productive interactions with her during my tenure as President of the NMA,” Enabulele said.
He said Oyo would be missed especially for her unique attributes and contributions to national development, particularly at this critical stage of the nation’s history.
He condoled with members of the deceased’s family, staff and management of the News Agency of Nigeria, Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigeria Union of Journalists. (NAN) [eap_ad_3]
