Abuja – Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, said the institution recorded only five cases of examination malpractice in 2015/2016 session out of 40,000 students to confirm its zero tolerance to crime.
Ambali disclosed this while featuring at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum, in Abuja on Sunday.
According to him, this figure is low, possibly because of the strictness of the university management and decision to expel any student caught cheating during examinations.
“As far as the University of Ilorin is concerned we have zero tolerance to examination malpractice which means any student caught no matter which home he or she comes from he or she will leave the university.
“All those who want to come in we let them understand that University of Ilorin has zero tolerance to examination malpractice and criminal tendencies that is what is keeping our discipline and moral high.
“The number has drastically reduced, for example in the last exams 2015/2016 second semester we had only five cases out of probably over 40,000 students who sat for examinations.
“ Which means our zero tolerance and the fact that if you are caught you are given the ticket to go home is working.
” This has reduced the number of exam malpractice culprits to the barest minimum,’’ he reiterated.
Ambali noted that the zero tolerance of the institution to exam malpractice has been on for the past ten years, saying this has cut down the level of examination malpractice in the university.
He said: “for instance in the last three years, the University of Ilorin has been the most subscribed university in the country with over 100,000 applicants wanting to study in the university.
“And the quota that we have is just about 10, 000 spaces which means we have to device a means of screening those 100, 000 to bring them down to the required number.
“Unfortunately those that are trying to come in probably they did not know the culture of the University of Ilorin.
“When they were asked to up load their SSCE results some up loaded an inflated SSCE result.
“Those with credit that is `C` up loaded distinction `A` and then base on what they up loaded we gave them provisional admission.
The don said during verification the candidates were asked to come with their original results, but to their shock the SSCE results that were presented were quite different from the ones up loaded online.
“ As a result they were denied admission and which is a clear indication that the University of Ilorin has zero tolerance to exam malpractice which such act represents.
“So those are first step in entering the University of Ilorin because if those people should be allowed to come in the next exam which is mainly computer base they may still put up such act.
He said that 70 per cent of the institution’s examination were mainly computer base.
