Abuja – Mr Ndubisi Eke, a registered Pharmacist based in Nnewi, Anambra, said fungal infections had the tendencies of transmission from mother to child in pregnancy.
Eke disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that fungal infections were of numerous forms but a few affect humans which could either be harmful to human or not.
According to him, fungal diseases are of systemic and dermal forms, while the systemic fungal infection is transmittable.
He further said that fungal infections were majorly contacted in dirty environments.
“Systemic fungal infection is usually transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy and spreading of the infection can occur during menstruation even with a high degree of hygiene.
“When the acid base of an individual is reduced, fungal infections can affect the person,” he said.
He added that patients who are diabetic were highly prone to fungal infections from their environment, while it could also be contacted by getting in touch with an infected person.
Eke, however, said that treatment of fungal infections took a longer duration adding to its rooted nature into the part of the body it affects.

“A fungal infection are resistant to many drugs by its nature and the rate at which the treatment penetrates the affected cells is slow,” said the expert.
The pharmacist further said treatment of fungal infections took a while, adding that fungi that affect the nails and scalp could take the period of six months to one year to effectively be cured in adults.
He also said that fungal infections on the skin required three months to six months for treatment while vagina fungal infections needed the right medications.
However, he urged patients who already had fungal infections and undergoing treatment not to defy prescriptions for treatment.
Eke further said that maintenance of clean environment makes for avoidance of fungi. (NAN)
