Lagos – A security expert, Mr Musa Balogun, on Wednesday said that it was only through intelligence information sharing that private security guard companies could remain relevant to society.
Balogun made the call at the ongoing 6th Regional African Security Conference organised by the Lagos Chapter of American Society of Industrial Security.
Balogun who is also the Vice-Chairman, Abuja Chapter of ASIS, said that many security professionals were fond of hoarding information.
He said: “For a security professional to be relevant in an organisation or any industry, you must improve on security awareness.
“Without awareness you cannot be in business. Yes, capacity building is good. You are trained but of what good is this knowledge without you imparting it to others.
“And that is one thing that is affecting us in this part of the world because we have so many professional but how much are we sharing the information that we have with people.
“The more people know about an issue, the more they are prepared; they become conscious of it.
“When you begin to tell people the areas that they could be vulnerable, they will want to know more and will come back to you,’’ said.
Balogun said that steps as basic as sending short text messages to the management and staff members on real-time happenings within locations of interest and projections helped a lot.
“You could even gather security-related information from the dailies and send them before anyone is awake.

“So, by the time you begin to do this, the organisation will want to know more and when you recommend how to mitigate these things they want to listen to you.
“Once you are doing this you are already adding value and they will want to keep you’’.
Balogun urged security personnel in the country to endeavour to improve on their jobs and add to the bottom-line of their organisations. (NAN)
