Lagos- Mr Adebola Shabi, the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), on Monday said noise could be harmful if it exceeded specified national and state standards.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that noise could be an unwanted or unpleasant sounds or a sound that was valueless to others.
According to him, noise causes a lot of damages to our system.
“Before l go to the health impact of noise, l have to let you know the standards we have in the country and the state.
“In the state, we have the noise level during the day at 55 decibels and at night, 45 decibels in residential areas.
“And in industrial areas, 90 decibels during the day and 80 decibels at night.

“But when your noise level exceeds these limits, it now becomes a noise pollution that has health impact on people.
“Noise is in valueless to others and it can affect your hearing aids.
Noise also can impair on your central nervous system.
“It can make you to be agitated. If you are on medication, noise can affect the way your medications works on you and it can affect your sleeping habit.
“So, if you are exposed to noise that is over 115 decibels, it can lead to deafness in an exposure period of over six hours.”
The manager, however, said that the rate of petitions against noise pollution had reduced considerably in the state.
According to him, religious houses are defying standard regulations on noise pollution but now, compliance level has gone up. (NAN)
