LAGOS – Some health experts have called on the Federal and State Governments to improve the nation’s health sector in order to make healthcare accessible to the citizens.
They made the call on Tuesday in Lagos in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Mr Omobafemi Daini of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Lagos chapter, stressed the need for governments to sanitise the health care system.
He said: “good health care delivery systems operational in other advanced countries could be introduced in Nigeria to make the health system efficient.
“Nigeria’s health sector is in a poor state and our leaders are not caring enough because they can afford to travel overseas at any cost to take care of themselves. [eap_ad_2] “Our leaders, who go overseas should come to Nigeria to implement good health care delivery system that they have seen there.
Daini said that hospitals in Nigeria should also be equipped to handle complicated health issues.
“As a nation, there are lots of issues to be addressed in our health sector.
“We generate enough revenue from taxes, oil and other areas that can be used to improve the health care system.
“Due to lack of accountability, things continue to get worse. People die of cancer, diabetes, heart and kidney diseases because they cannot access basic health care.
“We should be at a level where our health facilities can handle the treatment and management of complicated health situations without going to India, USA and UK for treatment.
“Our facilities should be properly equipped for this task.
“Nigeria has talented health experts, who can handle many health conditions here if the facilities are available,’’ he said.
Speaking on the same vein, Dr Osahon Enabulele, Vice President, West Africa Region, Commonwealth Medical Association, said that efficient health care system would stem the increasing cases of non-communicable diseases.
He said: “Government at all levels should put in efforts to make the nation’s health system to be of international standard.
“With the increase in deaths from non-communicable diseases, it is high time to set up specialised health centres, such as cancer and kidney transplant centres to cater for both the rich and poor.
“More investments should go into the health sector.
“The governments and the private sector should also collaborate in this regard.
“Consistent and effective campaigns targeted at health and fitness awareness promotion should be deployed in urban and rural areas.’’ (NAN) [eap_ad_3]
