Fake clearing agent in court over alleged N1.3m fraud


LAGOS – A businessman, Ismail Adebayo, who allegedly defrauded a man of N1.3 million was on Friday arraigned before an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Adebayo, 34, who resides at No. 65, Alimosho Road, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos is being tried for fraud and stealing.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, said that the accused committed the offences on Sept.17 at Oshodi.
He said that the accused fraudulently obtained N1.3 million from one Gbenga Oyegunle with the pretext to clear the complainant’s consignment at Tin-Can Port.
The prosecutor said that the complainant’s brother, Femi Oyegunle, living in U.S., sent the 40 feet container to him.
“The complainant’s brother sent two Toyota Camry 2001 Model car, Honda Odyssey 2006 model space bus and Isuzu Axion 2002 jeep to him in Nigeria.
“He paid the accused, who claimed to be a clearing and forwarding agent N1.3 million, which he collected at Oshodi First Bank for the clearing,” the prosecutor said.
Olatunde said the offence contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 prescribes 15 years jail term as penalty for offenders.
The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, adjourned the case till Jan. 13 for mention. (NAN)
