A devastating motor accident on the Ekwegbe road along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka route in Enugu State has resulted in the loss of sixteen lives, as confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe.
The accident occurred around 5:20 p.m., involving an 18-seater white Toyota Hummer bus with Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA, bearing the inscription “Masha Allah.” Reportedly, the vehicle lost control at high speed and crashed into the fence of Maduka University along the road.
Tragically, the bus burst into flames upon impact, leaving the passengers, including 14 males and two females, burnt beyond recognition. They were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
However, amidst the devastation, two passengers were rescued alive and promptly taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention, thanks to the swift response of police officers, soldiers, and compassionate citizens at the scene.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle, loaded with edible vegetables, other food items, and passengers’ luggage, was en route to Nsukka from the Enugu axis.
