Abuja – The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has shelved the inauguration of Nyanya High Capacity Bus terminal slated to hold on Friday, June 30 following disagreement among transport unions in the area.
Mr Hussaini Usman, the Administration Manager of the Terminal, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja that arrangements were already concluded for the inauguration before the disagreement erupted.
He said that efforts were being made to resolve the issues, adding that the matter was currently before the Police FCT Command.
“We had set everything for the inauguration because, in principle, the FCT Minister had approved the commencement of operation at the terminal.
“It was when passengers and other visitors for the inauguration started coming in that some touts from illegal motor parks around came to disrupt the ceremony.
“Their fear is that once the terminal is inaugurated, it will be very difficult for them to have passengers because of the facilities put in place at the terminal,” he said.
Usman said plans were ongoing to perform the inauguration on Monday, adding that the disagreement among the unions would have been resolved.
He said that enough security measures have been put in place, including installation of CCTV at all the entry points of the terminal to ensure the security of lives and property at the park.
According to him, plans have been concluded to deploy police officers to the terminal to support the private security guards employed to secure the park.
Usman told NAN that the high capacity and mini buses that would be used for the operation of the terminal would run a 24 hour-service.
NAN recalls that the terminal had been closed following the spate of terrorist bomb blasts of April 14, 2014 and that of May 1 of the same year, during which several people were killed with scores of others injured.
