Female candidates who sat for the 2019 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates outshined their male counterparts in the examination, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has said.
The Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Olu Adenipekun, announced this on Friday while briefing reporters at the Council’s office in Yaba, Lagos.
According to him, the percentage of female candidates who scored a minimum of five credits, including English Language and Mathematics was more than the male.
Adenipekun said, “A total of 1,596,161 candidates registered for the examination from 18,639 recognised secondary schools in Nigeria.
“Of that number, 1,590,173 candidates sat for the examination, among which 822,098 were male while 768,075 were female, representing 51.70 per cent and 48.30 per cent respectively.”
“No fewer than 1,309,570 candidates representing 82.35 per cent obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects, i.e with or without English Language and/or Mathematics; while 1,020,519 candidates, representing 64.18 per cent, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
“Of this number, 507,862, that is 49.77 per cent, were males and 512,657, that is 50.23 per cent, were female candidates,” he added.
The WAEC official revealed further that the Council withheld the results of 180,205 candidates in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice, representing 11.33 per cent of the total number of candidates.
He explained that the cases were being investigated and reports of the investigations would be presented to the appropriate Committee of the Council in due course.
Adenipekun added that the Committee’s decisions would be communicated to the affected candidates through their various schools.
He thanked the staff of the Council for their commitment during the conduct, marking process and the release of the results within the period it promised stakeholders.
