The Federal Government has provided an update on its efforts to extradite Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian citizen and former city councillor in Finland, to face charges in Nigeria.
Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), shared this information during a special briefing on Thursday. The event was organised to update Nigerians and stakeholders on the achievements of the Federal Ministry of Justice in managing criminal justice matters since October 2024.
Speaking about Ekpa, Fagbemi stated that the activist is currently under investigation in Finland for suspected terrorist activities. He noted that Nigeria is already engaging with Finnish authorities regarding his extradition.
“He committed an offence against the Finnish government as well as in Nigeria. His extradition will come at the right time,” Fagbemi stated.
Ekpa was arrested in Finland in November 2024, along with four others who were later released. His case is currently being handled by Finland’s Deputy Prosecutor General, who will decide whether to pursue charges.
Fagbemi also announced that Nigeria has successfully extradited two individuals to the United States. Hassan Bun Hussein Abolore Lawal was extradited in January 2025, while Okechukwu Josiah Odunna was returned in March 2025.
Additionally, the Minister disclosed that the Nigerian government is working with Qatari authorities to extradite Benjamin Nnanyereugo, also known as Killaboi. Nnanyereugo is wanted in Nigeria for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, Augusta, and is expected to be extradited from Qatar in April 2025 to face trial.
