Abuja – The Minister of Interior, Retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, on Friday, said the Federal Government would collaborate with the European Union (EU) in applying the latest technology to secure the nation’s vast borders.
The minister said this in Abuja when he received a delegation from the EU on border security.
He said the country would derive immense benefits from collaborating with friendly countries toward fighting terrorism, strengthen its border security and manage its migration challenges.
Dambazau noted that partnering with the EU would impact immensely on Nigeria’s security profile and provide a secure environment for both locals and foreign investors.
The minister welcomed the EU offer of assistance, adding that the Federal Government would be glad to tap into their expertise in counter-terrorism, border security management and general security.
He announced that plans had reached advanced stage to tighten border security and curtail illegal migration which inadvertently fanned pastoralist/farmers conflict in the country.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr Richard Young, who is the Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria, said the team
was in the country to offer their expertise on border management.
Young said the EU was also ready to partner with the Federal Government in addressing migration challenges, counter-terrorism and general security in the country.
The envoy offered the deployment of fund from the EU Emergency Trust Fund to assist Nigeria on any programme it comes up with on border security management. (NAN)
