ABUJA – The Federal Government will engage stakeholders on ways of reducing violence and insecurity in the country at a two-day retreat on human security, an official said on Sunday in Abuja.
The Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mike Omeri, disclosed this at a roundtable with the media in preparation for the national retreat in Abuja.
Omeri said the retreat would help in identifying ways of utilising what was available to achieve economic, health, political and personal security in the country.
The retreat is being held by NOA in collaboration with the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The retreat will hold from Nov.18 to Nov. 19 at the International Conference Centre, with stakeholders from the Nigeria Police, Immigration, Customs and the private sector participating.
“The idea is to engage stakeholders from all sectors of the economy, education, health, among others to discuss the way forward for the country,’’ Omeri said.
He said the retreat would ensure that all views which affected the nation, particularly in the area of national security, and geared towards national development, were harmonised.
The NOA director-general said the national human security agenda would emerge at the end of the retreat.
Omeri said it would bring about state and non-state actors to take ownership of the agenda and implement it through policy design and implementation at the different levels of governance.
He said the retreat was aimed at setting agenda for African countries to have the mechanism for citizens to forgive one another as well as promote collective consciousness in different areas.
“The retreat will discuss different areas which define security, especially in unemployment, poverty alleviation, education, economy, health among others.’’
Omeri said the retreat would enhance the study of human security in Nigeria’s academic institutions for enhanced research and statistics.
“These are to pave way for positive solutions which will foster peace for national development,’’ he said.(NAN)
