ENUGU – The Federal Government has promised to promptly complete the outstanding 58 kilometres of the Enugu-Onitsha highway and the 61km of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway.

The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, made the promise in Enugu on Thursday while inaugurating the rehabilitation of the roads.
Onolememen regretted the delay in the rehabilitation of the roads for decades, saying that the government would do everything to ensure their completion.
“The rehabilitation was in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government to boost the economy of the zone as well as reduce poverty,’’ he said.
On the Enugu-Onitsha road, the minister said the 58-km Enugu-Amansea section was awarded to RCC Nig. Ltd at the cost of N24.2 billion while the 61-km Lokpanta-Port Harcourt section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt road was awarded to CGC Nig. Ltd at the cost of N32.3 billion.
Onolememen said the contract duration for the Enugu-Onitsha road was 36 months while that of Enugu-Port Harcourt would last for 24 months.
In a message to the inauguration, Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu State said the success of the contract would be a joint effort by the state and local governments as well as the communities.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Goddy Madueke, called on the communities around the roads to support the efforts of the Federal Government in bringing dividends of democracy to them.
“By this project, President Goodluck Jonathan has demonstrated his love for the people of the South East zone,’’ Chime said.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, Chief Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, promised to monitor and supervise the roads to ensure their completion on schedule.
In an address, the Executive Director of CGC Nig. Ltd, Mr Fan Xiaojing, expressed optimism that the company would deliver quality road within the scheduled period.
Speaking with journalists, the traditional ruler of Ihe in Awgu Local Government Area, Igwe Godwin Ekoh, commended the Federal Government for the rehabilitation of the roads.
He regretted that former the contractors awarded the roads could not deliver the projects.
Ekoh assured the government that his community would cooperate with the contractors to ensure speedy delivery. (NAN)
