The federal government has announced the temporary closure of the Independence Bridge (Marina-bound) in Lagos State for critical maintenance and rehabilitation work.
In a statement on Monday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, confirmed that the bridge would be closed from April 1 until the end of May 2025. She urged motorists to use alternative routes to ease traffic congestion during the repair period.
She also apologized for any inconvenience the closure might cause and expressed appreciation for the public’s cooperation in ensuring the safety and durability of the infrastructure.
“The closure will affect traffic heading from Ahmadu Bello Way and Adeola Odeku towards Marina, Eko Bridge, and Onikan by Zone 2. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly,” Kesha stated.
Meanwhile, the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has reportedly awarded a contract for the renovation of the Tin Can and Apapa ports in Lagos to Chagoury Group, a multinational conglomerate owned by Lebanese-Nigerian billionaire Gilbert Chagoury.
Sources indicate that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the contract in February 2024, and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is expected to make an official announcement soon.
“Yes, the contract was awarded to Chagoury Group following due process,” a source confirmed to TheCable.
