ABUJA – The Federal Government has approved the upgrading of the status of the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, zonal offices in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
This is contained in a statement issued and signed by Mr Samuel Olowookere, Deputy Director of Press, in Abuja on Monday.
The statement further said approval had been given for the establishment of Labour Desk Offices for industrial dispute-prone Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the Federal Public Service.
It stated that the Ministry of Labour and Productivity had deployed Directors of Labour to man the six zonal labour offices.
The statement stated that Resident Labour Desk Officers had also been deployed to selected seven-pilot federal ministries.
It stated that Labour Minister Emeka Wogu identified the pioneer beneficiary Ministries as Health, Education, Petroleum Resources, Aviation, Power, Transport, and Agriculture and Rural Development.

The statement stated that the zonal Labour Offices, which were until now, headed by deputy directors, had been upgraded to zonal directorates.
The new directorates were Port-Harcourt, Bauchi, Enugu, Lagos, Kaduna and Makurdi.
It stated that Wogu commended the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for approving the ministry’s request to strengthen labour administration at the zonal offices.
He also commended the promotion and sustenance of industrial harmony at the various conflict-prone MDAs.
Wogu said the ministry’s strategy of decentralising labour administration was to check the increasing spate of industrial crises.
“Emphasis has also been placed on a paradigm shift for sustaining the ministry in line with international best practices in the face of ever increasing and sophisticated challenges.
“This demands a more developmental, pragmatic, decentralised, functional and democratic approach to labour administration in a globalising world,” it added. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
