Abuja – Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, said Federal Government was deepening efforts in developing the role of mechanics and technicians in the country.
Onu made this known in Abuja on Monday when he received a team from Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria (MOMTAN) in his office.
He said that the government would galvanize stronger political will to play a supportive role in developing mechanics and technicians across the country.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]“We will seriously intervene and continue to support our artisans by all imaginable means such as financial bailout, legislative measures and patronages, among others,“ he said.
Onu charged the association to do more in research and development to increase job and wealth creation towards strengthening national economy.
He said that the ministry would assist the association to liaise with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory on the land allocated to mechanics 2010.
He also said that the ministry would collaborate with MOMTAN in order to fast-track the realisation of its laudable objectives, which were capable of contributing to the development of the nation.
Earlier, National President of the association, Mr Suleman Oseni, called for “proper partnership’’ with the ministry to advance its performance.
According to him, it is high time `made-in-Nigeria’ and `buy Nigeria’ vehicles campaign was successful.
“ We must put a deliberate plan in place for the training and retraining of the mechanics and technicians, with provision of adequate tools for them.
“ The government should develop ancillary industries for the production of car components and accessories and will involve our mechanics fully.
“Conclusively, the government should build and develop local technical and maintenance expertise through the Ministry of Science and Technology, “ he said. (NAN)
