LAGOS – Dr Gloria Elemo, the Director General, Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), has urged the private sector to invest in researches that could lead to natural cure of diseases in the country.
Elemo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Tuesday that Nigeria “is endowed with natural herbs and plants’’.
“They can be used to combat deadly diseases like small pox, chicken pox and others if the private sectors should provide them funds for research and process the outcome into natural cure,’’ she said.
The DG said that it was unfortunate that some diseases which seemed to defy cure were currently rearing their ugly heads on the African continent.
According to her, researching into use of herbs and plants as cure to diseases has been a challenge since stakeholders from the private sector have not supported it. [eap_ad_1] Elemo said that with adequate funding and support from the private sector, FIIRO and other research institutions would be able to discover more local solutions to most of the diseases affecting the society.
She said that FIIRO had world-class experts and researchers who through their research findings had found solutions that could cure diseases affecting the people.
Elemo however commended the Federal Government for establishing research centres which had improved the quality of researches in the country.
“The Federal Government has lived up to its expectation in containing the outbreak of viral diseases such as small pox, chicken pox and the recent Ebola Virus Disease.
“This is the first time in the history of the country that the government has been very proactive, taking into recognition the vigour and manner in which President Goodluck Jonathan made efforts to tackle the disease,’’ she said. (NAN)
