Lagos – Mr Matti Anttonen, the visiting Finland Deputy Minister of External Economic Relations, on Thursday called on Nigeria’s private sector to be active in the regeneration of the nation’s forest resources.
Anttonen told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the private sector had important role to play in the regeneration and conservation of Nigeria’s forest resources.
“It is rather surprising to see little forest resources across Nigeria today. I believe that Nigeria should have much larger forest resources.
“Nigeria needs to embark on massive planting of more trees and this is where the Nigeria’s private sector should really be active in the nation’s forest regeneration process.
‘’ Finland’s present rich forest resources was because of the involvement and commitment of her private sector to the development of her forest resources,’’ he said.
Anttonen said that Finland would, in the near future, be
among the top forested parts of the world because of the involvement of the private sector in his country’s forest development.
The Deputy Minister of External Economic Relations said that it was thee privat sector that was ‘’majorly’’ in charge of the nation’s forest resources.

“Currently, Finland has more forest resources that she had some 30 years ago.
“And with what the private forest owners are doing now, I see a much more promising forest in our country,’’ he said.
Attonen said that his government had started building contacts for cooperation and knowledge transfer between both countries forest resources managers. (NAN)
