Sofia – A fire erupted in Bulgaria’s largest camp for refugees and migrants, forcing the evacuation of 500 people, private broadcaster reported Tuesday.
The fire in Harmanli, near the border with Turkey, broke out during the night and was presumably electric, as a result of heating in the freezing cold, the report said.
The report added that nobody was reported injured in the building that burned down.
There are around 2,000 people overall in the camp.
Bulgaria has become the European gateway for migrants trying to reach Western Europe over the past 11 months, since the Balkan migration route, originally through Greece, was formally closed.
With the migrants still trickling in, but mostly unable to continue past Serbia due to hard borders with Hungary and Croatia, thousands have been stranded in Bulgaria and Serbia.
