FIVB U-21 CHAMPIONSHIPS: NIGERIA’S MALE, FEMALE TEAMS CRASH OUT IN GROUP STAGES

ABUJA – Nigeria’s under-21 teams have crashed out of the ongoing FIVB U-21 Male and Female Beach Volleyball Championships in the group stages at Larnaka in Cyprus.

Their exit was after the male team won only one out of five matches while the female team lost all their five matches.

The championships have 32 teams each in the male and female categories.

Nigeria’s male team lost to hosts Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Norway and Switzerland, but could only defeat Niger Republic in their last Pool A match on Saturday.

The win could not help the Nigerian side as they placed fifth on the table, where only four teams were to scale through from the group stage to the first round.

In all five matches played, they won 138 points and lost 212 points to have a ratio point of 0.651.

The female team on the other hand could not win any of their matches against Austria, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and Italy.

They placed sixth on the Pool D table, having won 104 points and lost 210 points with a ratio of 0.495.

Nigeria were only making their debut in both the male and female categories of the championships which is in its fourth edition.

The 2014 championships which started on July 23 will end on July 27.(NAN)
