Flood victims: NEMA, Anambra SEMA to collaborate on relief items distribution

Awka    –     The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says it will collaborate with the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in the distribution of basic food items to flood victims in the state.

Mr Walson Ibarakumo, the Coordinator, Enugu Zonal Office of NEMA, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.

Ibarakumo said about 207 tonnes of food items including, rice, beans, garri, sugar, salt, seasonings, tomatoes, vegetable oil and beverages were ready for direct distribution to the victims.

“We have about 207 tonnes of food items in the warehouse which we are about to commence distributing directly to affected persons in Anambra.

“NEMA is going to ensure that those who deserve these items get them and we are working with Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to ensure effectiveness.”

He said that people in the 63 communities across the nine affected local governments would benefit in this phase of intervention.

Ibarakumo said that NEMA had set up Emergency Operations Office in Awka to coordinate the post-flood disaster situation including, the resettlement of displaced persons.

He said that the worst was over as the waters were receding, adding that the agency was going into the next phase of Post Flood Disaster Needs Assessment which entailed capturing the full effect of the flood.

“We shall be looking at loss of human lives, buildings, business losses, farm lands, farm produce, the general livelihood of the people that have been affected.

“The target is to mitigate the extent of the loss they incurred as a result of the disaster,” he said.
