LAFIA (Sundiata Post) – The Nasarawa State Government has advised farmers to adopt new farming methods in order to boost food production in the state.
Alhaji Tanko Tunga, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources made the call on Wednesday in Lafia when he appeared before the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture on the ministry’s 2025 budget assessment for the first quarter.
The commissioner said that if farmers adopt new methods of farming, it would go a long way in tackling unemployment and boost food security in the state.
Tunga said that the state government would continue to harness the state potential in the agricultural sector, enhance mechanised agriculture and execute new innovations to tackle food security in the State.
He said that the state government has put in place all the necessary measures through inputs and assembling of tractors to enhance mechanised farming.
He advised farmers to adhere strictly to advise of experts and improve on their cultivations.
The commissioner further warned farmers against selling of farm inputs and fertilizers being provided by government.
Tunga emphasised the need for more unity, understanding and cooperation between farmers and headers for a smooth farming season.
Earlier, the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, Dr Peter Akwe commended innovations fine-tuned by the State Commissioner of Agriculture in enhancing farming.
He appealed to the state government to make adequate provisions of farm inputs to the farmers.
Akwe assured the commissioner of the committee’s readiness to give the ministry all the needed support to succeed.
He called for all hands to be on deck to tackle food security in the state considering the agricultural potential of the people. ( NAN)
