The Omoluabi Progressives, a political group loyal to Rauf Aregbesola, former governor of Osun State, has decided to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This decision was made after a meeting in Ilesa, where stakeholders agreed to the resolution backed by members from all 332 wards in the state.
In a statement by Abosede Oluwaseun, the group’s Organising and Publicity Secretary, reasons for their departure included being sidelined within the party, unfair suspension and expulsion of their leaders, and continued criticism of their structure. The statement also pointed out dissatisfaction with the APC’s handling of internal crises, which led to poor performance in recent elections and a decline in public support.
The group voted to align with a new political platform ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election.
Rauf Aregbesola praised the members for their loyalty to the principles of integrity and good governance. He urged them to focus on building the Omoluabi Progressives into a strong force for change in Osun. He said, “I am happy you have spoken with one voice. This united front will lead us to collective victory. We must stay committed to bringing prosperity to our state through responsible leadership.”
Aregbesola assured members that efforts to strengthen the group would soon yield results. He emphasized the importance of attracting genuine supporters and working with people from all backgrounds to achieve their vision for Osun.
The Chairman of the group, Alhaji Azeez Adesiji, also appreciated members for their dedication. He encouraged them to remain committed to the ideals of true progressivism, which the group represents. He highlighted the progress made so far in meetings across local governments, including an increase in membership.
The Omoluabi Progressives was formed after the dissolution of The Osun Progressives (TOP), another faction aligned with Aregbesola. The APC expelled Aregbesola and his allies in 2024, which led to the creation of the new group. Political analysts believe the Omoluabi Progressives could emerge as a major player in the 2026 elections.
