ABUJA (SUNDIATA POST)- Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NiDO) Qatar, on Saturday eulogised Nigeria’s former ambassador to Qatar, Dr. Haruna Bawa-Abdullahi Wase, highlighting his contributions to the strengthening of diplomatic relations between the two countries
The NiDO-Qatar former president, Victor Ikoli, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview said since even with his passing, Wase is still remembered for the role he played there.
According to him, it is the sixth anniversary since Wase’s passing on Sept. 14, 2018 and condolences have continued to come in extolling his virtues, leadership style, and unifying role within the African diplomatic community in Qatar.
Ikoli said, “Wase was a pivotal figure for African ambassadors in Qatar: He was an anchor for African diplomats and they looked up to him for advice.”
The former NiDO-Qatar boss expressed gratitude to the Qatari government for its support to Wase’s family, saying he is also celebrated for his active role in organising the 2018 African Day event, aimed at fostering unity and understanding among African nations.
“The event showcased rich cultural diversity that emphasised the importance of unity through cultural exchange; it is only through such gatherings we understand our customs properly and show hands of friendship.
“Wase was known for his philanthropy. Just before his passing Wase provided financial assistance to facilitate the repatriation of a deceased Nigerian.
“Such generosity and commitment to helping those in need were key aspects of his character.
“As a tribute to his legacy, NIDO-Qatar launched the Ambassador Abdullahi Wase Football Competition, an event that continues to promote unity within the Nigerian community in Qatar,” he said.
He mentioned that Wase’s efforts to ease burdens on Nigerian citizens, such as abolishing illegal service charges for passport processing, were widely celebrated during his tenure.
Also that the former ambassadors funeral was attended by many high-profile diplomats and Qatari officials, including Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, mother of the Amir of Qatar, who personally visited the family to offer condolences.
Ikoli said, “Wase is remembered as devoted diplomat, philanthropist, and leader whose impact continues to resonate within Nigerian and African communities in Qatar. (NAN)
