Former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ali Ciroma, has passed away at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, on Tuesday.
The sad news was announced by a family member, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, who also serves as the Secretary of the Borno State Council, Nigeria Union of Journalists, in a statement released on Tuesday.
In the statement, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma expressed deep sorrow over the death of the unionist and announced that the burial ceremony would take place on Wednesday at 4 pm at the residence of the deceased along Galadima Road near Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home) in Maiduguri.
Ali Ciroma served as the president of the NLC from 1984 to 1988 until he was removed from office by the military administration of Gen Ibrahim Babangida, which disbanded the union. However, during the Abacha regime, he was reinstated into the realm of unionism and appointed as the Sole Administrator of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers.
