EKET (AKWA IBOM) – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Eket Unit Command, arrested 50 road users and convicted 17 traffic offenders for violating traffic rules in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.
The unit Commander, Mr Odo Kelvin, gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Eket on Friday.
He said the offenders were arrested for various traffic offences such as non-use of seat belt, violated speed limit, over loading, use of mobile phone while driving, among others.
He added that “about 17 traffic offenders were convicted while two were remanded in prison custody pending the determination of their suit.’’
He said that the Mobil Court was in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom Judiciary to try traffic offenders, adding that most offenders were made to pay fines.
The commander said that the command had send a signal to motorists that the Ember month and festive period would not be business as usual for traffic offenders in Eket and its environs.
Kelvin added that the command had commenced “vigorous’’ enlightenment and sensitisation campaign on the need to drive safely during the yuletide.
He maintained that motorists should adhere strictly to traffic rules due to influx of heavier vehicular traffic as people travelled to see their love ones during this festive period. (NAN)
