Onitsha (Anambra)- The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday mobilised its personnel and equipment to clamp-down on reckless drivers and those driving against the traffic in Anambra, especially in Onitsha.
The Sector Commander of the corps in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the clamp-down was part of its “Operation Restore Sanity in Roads in Anambra State’’.
He said that the operation, launched on Friday, was meant to specifically check the age-long route violation in Onitsha and its environs.
“What we want to achieve and mobilised all our available resources for is to stop all recklessness, indiscipline and willful disobedient of traffic laws and regulations on Anambra roads, especially in Onitsha and its environs.
“Onitsha has become notorious with commercial drivers driving against traffic, and we are here not just to stop them but make sure that any of them caught pays the stipulated fine of N55,000 to serve as a deterrent,’’ he said.
He said that the corps in the state had extended its hours of operation to ensure the safety of the people on the roads.
“Previously, we worked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. but we have extended it to 8 p.m. to ensure safety of all as well as key into Gov. Willie Obiano’s vision to have a safer Anambra for all,’’ he said.

Ajayi also lauded other security agencies for assisting in making Anambra roads safer.
“Road safety still remains a shared responsibility which every individual in the society has a role to play.
“So I believe that the more security agencies on the roads, the better for everybody in terms of emergencies and safety,’’ the commander said.
He posited that the operation would run concurrently with a mobile court in Onitsha for proper interpretation of the regulation as well as enlightenment of offenders.
The operation covers the Onitsha-Enugu, Onitsha-Owerri and Onitsha-Atani roads, which transverse the commercial town and its environs. (NAN)
