Awka – ACM Shehu Zaki, the Zonal Commander RS5, Benin, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), says the strategic safety goals of FRSC are achievable if officers discharge their duties with discipline.
Zaki said this in Awka on Monday while addressing officers, regular and special marshals of the Anambra command at a one-day retreat with the theme: “Achieving the 2016 Strategic Goals: the Way Forward”.
He said that the objectives of the FRSC, which included reducing road accidents by 50 per cent and fatality by 25 per cent, could be achieved if all stakeholders in the road transport subsector worked together.
The officer described retreat as a time of stock taking and developing strategies to realise set goals and objectives.
He commended the Anambra command for being the first in the zone to organise such a retreat to brainstorm on the way forward for road safety in 2016.
“We must brace up for the road map to execute our safety policies programmes for 2016.
“We must be disciplined; there must be cooperation in our efforts to achieve our target of 50 per cent reduction in road traffic crash and 25 per cent reduction.
“I must say that the FRSC has demonstrated enough commitment, and with the corporation of management and stakeholders at all levels, we shall do more,” he said.
Earlier, the Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, Corps Commander, Sunday Ajayi, said there was need to sensitise stakeholders on the extent of work to be done to ensure minimal accidents on the highway.
Ajayi said the retreat was in line with the strategic programme of the headquarters for the attainment of set goals.
He was optimistic that the workshop would yield fruitful outcomes that would be useful to the success of their operations in the command.
Also speaking, the Coordinator of Special Marshals in the Command, Mr Ben Osaka, said the retreat was worthwhile as it would encourage more commitment from members.
Osaka pledged continued support of the special marshals of the FRSC in the command towards the achievement of set safety goals.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that participants at event were department heads in the command and all the unit commanders in the state.
Others were coordinators of the special marshals in the various zones in the state.
The highlights of the event were the presentation of award of best unit command to Nnewi, best department award to the Public Enlightenment and best leadership quality to Mr Ben Osaka, Coordinator of Special Marshals.
