Abuja – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), says it will soon conclude harmonisation of all motorists’ bio-metric data in its system with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in line with presidential directive.
Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal of the commission, made this known on Monday at a news conference on the state of traffic on the nation’s highways in Abuja.
According to Oyeyemi, harmonisation exercise is ongoing and will soon be concluded in order to ensure that all captured bio-metrics data are centralised.
“FRSC has commenced harmonisation of its bio-metric data with NIMC which is in line with the recent directive of Mr President.
“The exercise will be completed as soon as possible, I therefore call on all Nigerians to buy into FRSC in order to collectively make our roads safe for all,” he said.
The corps marshal said that the recently concluded “Operation Scorpion”, targeted at articulated and haulage vehicles in the country was successful.
“A total of 2,261 offenders were arrested for 3,289 offences, 1,283 were arraigned at mobile courts on the routes, 1,194 (93 per cent) were convicted with fines while four offenders (3.3 per cent) were imprisoned without option of fines.
“The courts discharged 89 of those arraigned which amounted to seven per cent of the total persons arraigned,” he said.
Oyeyemi said the arrests were made over various offences including lane indiscipline, failure to latch containers, overloading, driving without driver’s licence, and use of rickety vehicles.
He said that Lagos-Ibadan route recorded the highest number of offenders 975 (43 per cent), while Mokwa-Makera had the least 92 (4.1 per cent) of total offenders.
FRSC boss added that the exercise, which took place between July 27 and Aug. 14, led to impounding 1,791 vehicles.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls the exercise took place along seven critical trailers/tankers routes with deployment of 3,000 personnel.
