Enugu – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Friday, said that it had deployed its personnel and specialised vehicles to the identified 24 accident-prone spots in South-East.
The Zonal Commanding Officer of FRSC, Mr Samuel Obayemi, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on the Special Yuletide Patrol of the Zonal Command.
Obayemi, who is in-charge of Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States, said that deployment had been made to these areas to ensure that motorists drive with reduced speed and caution in these spots.
“One of these spots is the Ugwuonyeama area of Enugu-Onitsha Road, where we have a sharp bend and gully.
“FRSC officers and men as well as our ambulances and tow trucks are already at these spots as I am speaking to you now,’’ he said.
Obayemi, however, commended the Federal Government for doing complete and sound palliative work on some major roads in the South-East geo-political zone.
The zonal commander said that apart from the palliative work on a lane of the dual carriage roads; solid total re-construction work was ongoing on the other lane of same road corridors in the zone.
He noted that the Federal Government had lived up to its promises of ensuring that other lanes of Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port Harcourt roads are ‘‘very usable,’’ while total re-construction work is ongoing this dry season.
“The FRSC is grateful to Mr President, who is always matching his words with actions especially on issues of well-being and welfare of Nigerians irrespective of their areas in the country.
“The palliative repair works on major road corridors in the South-East is an eloquent testimony that the federal government means well for all Nigerians.
“The palliative repair work done on Enugu-Onitsha Road and Enugu-Port Harcourt Road remain an eloquent testimony that road users would have a smooth ride this season.
“With the palliative work, I sincerely believe that the flow of traffic would be fast and people using this transit-route corridors will get to their destinations on time,’’ he said.
The FRSC zonal boss said that the renewed partnership between the FRSC and the Federal Ministry of Works was yielding positive results.
“Apart from the series of meetings we held earlier this year on how best to improve the condition of the roads, which had been done.
“Zonal commanders of FRSC and zonal Works Controllers have resolved to be meeting once every quarter to review the conditions of the roads.
“This renewed partnership will greatly enhance the work of FRSC in its mandate of keeping the roads safe for everyone,’’ he said.
He, however, urged road users to obey FRSC officials on the road as “they are on the road to protect their interest and ensure free-flow of traffic.
“FRSC is doing a humanitarian job and as such we are out to ensure that all is well with people using the roads and not to intentionally add to anybody’s misery,’’ he said. (NAN)
