YENAGOA, – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Board of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Bayelsa have commenced a joint campaign to rid the state of fake vehicle number plates.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Vincent Jack, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Friday.
Jack said that the campaign led to the impounding of 150 vehicles with fake number plates in the past two days.
He said the activities of an unidentified syndicate had led to the influx of fake number plates and drivers’ licence to be issued to unsuspecting motorists in Bayelsa.
According to him, the development is depriving Bayelsa government of the much needed revenue to provide social amenities to the people.
He said the commission had embarked on public enlightenment to alert the motorists on the dangers of patronising unauthorised sources for their vehicle number plates and drivers’ licence.
He said FRSC and BIR embarked on the exercise to verify the authenticity of the vehicle number plates and drivers’ licences.
Jack said that the joint patrol, which commenced on Thursday, went on in several parts of the state.
The sector commander said that motorists with fake number plates and drivers’ licences were advised to obtain genuine ones, while their vehicles were impounded.
Also, Mr Godson Torukuru, Chairman Bayelsa BIR, applauded the collaboration between the two organisations.
Torukuru told NAN that the operation was designed to identify and block the leakages that had affected the internally generated revenue of the state.
He said the board had no agents, and urged the motorists to obtain genuine number plates and drivers’ licences from its offices across the state. (NAN)
